Edward Winslow Coolidge (1967-2015)
Edward Winslow Coolidge grew up in Boston, went to Reed College, got an
MFA at California Institute for the Arts, and taught art in upstate New York,
until he passed away in March, 2015. Much of his art, whether writing,
drawing, painting, sculpture, or his life itself, explored the systems operating
within objects, including cities, houses, and bodies - the structures we inhabit.
"Often in my work, objects are altered to look back at themselves -- monitoring,
inspecting and displaying their own reasons for being. My sculptures allow the viewer
to see realms within familiar objects or environments invisible to the naked eye.
In altering the intended function of these manufactured objects or environments,
a new use for them is created, which both echoes and reinterprets their original purpose."
